Medication Non-Adherence – Impact on Brand Management

Medication Non-Adherence is one of the most serious public health problems and has a serious financial impact on all members. In terms of costs, the New England Healthcare Institute estimates that Medication Non-Adherence bears $ 290 billion in medical costs that can be avoided each year in the United States alone.

Reasons for non-compliance with medication

There are various reasons why patients do not take medication. However, it is important to consider the form of non-compliance you have when discussing the causes of non-compliance.

For example, simple oblivion is certainly the most common reason for otherwise hard-working patients to accidentally miss a dose here and there. These temporary gaps in daily compliance are a common focus of adherence interventions, but in most chronic conditions they are unlikely to lead to adverse consequences or increased medical costs.

The more important forms of Medication Non-Adherence are major non-compliance (lack of filling) and non-sustainability (lack of further filling), especially as they are associated with inadequate results and spending. For non-compliance with these forms, simply forgetting as the root cause does not make sense. In these cases, out-of-pocket costs are often mentioned as a driving factor. This makes sense, especially for low-income earners, who have very high out-of-pocket costs.

Pharmaceutical companies have long believed that their most important customer is not the patient taking the drug, but the doctor who writes the script. Due to this prejudice, the industry is lagging behind in stepping up efforts to improve medication adherence. This is, by chance, the only way patients can enjoy the tremendous health benefits of the drug.

It makes sense to improve medication adherence and increase sales. Revenue of $ 1 from increased substance use is one of the best profits pharmaceutical companies can make. The drug is already FDA approved, so there are no technical, regulatory, or clinical risks. Also, since the first script has already been created, there is no marketing cost. The only costs are the cost of the goods and the compliance program.
